I can't believe that I didn't blog at the first of September when I weighed myself and found that I had gained 5 whole pounds. That was quite a blow to me, since in the summer I try to eat as much fresh fruits and vegetables as I possibly can. So after the realization that something was amiss in my life, I had to take stock of what was I doing or not doing so I can make a self correction. It is vitally important to me to not fail at eating healthy. I do not EVER want to go back to my previous way of eating....but the weight gain made me realize that if I am not always vigilant, then small things can creep in and before I know it I am sunk. So the things I found when I evaluated what I was doing are:
1. Last spring when I started the exercise classes I was exercising for over an hour (leading 2 one half hour classes) and then started barefoot training on top of that. With all that exercise I was hungry more often than previously so I was eating more to keep up the strength. When I quite teaching the 2nd class and the barefoot training fell by the wayside, I DID NOT give up the extra food.
2. My portion sizes were almost double what they were the first year and a half. Most of that is due to eating more to keep up my strength for all the exercising.
3. I was eating late at night. This definitely will put weight on.
4. I have also been eating a lot more bread than I usually due, due to the fact that I have been too lazy to make homemade muffins.
5. Dennis' ever changing schedule this summer has made it difficult to eat at the same time everyday. One day he works normal, and the next he works nights and has to leave by 5:00 pm so we eat dinner at 4:00, by 7:30 I am pretty hungry again. On the days he does work a normal schedule he gets home about 6:00 pm, then some days runs, so we don't eat until 7:30 or 8:00 at night.
So what did I do with all this knowledge. Nothing really, just got depressed for awhile. What I should do is:
1. Cut back some on my portion sizes at meals.
2. Cut back on the bread & get off my lazy but and make some DANG,GOOD, HEALTHY MUFFINS.
3. Be more active during the day. Park at the end of the parking lot, take stairs instead of elevators/escalators. Take a walk around the neighborhood and enjoy the sunshine.
Yesterday morning (September 30), I weighed in again. I had lost those 5 pounds. YEAH!!!!!
I haven't really done anything differently, but I know what I should do, and have a keener awareness that I need to always be aware of what I am putting in my mouth. I do need to figure out how to eat healthy with Dennis' ever changing work schedule. It would be so much easier to eat healthy if he was 100% on board. But today he did say that he wasn't feeling too good, as he pats his abdomen. He is feeling bloated and constipated again. Then he said that he really should get off soda. I hope somehow he can find the desire and willpower to do so. The bloating and constipation would go away by eating healthy and it would make my life SO much easier.
